The upgrade of an item allows players to increase the gear score of an item to 700 and also add a final perk. Items can be upgraded if they're in your inventory and you bring them to the kiln.

Certain items can be upgraded to increase their stats (like a perfectly rolled breakpoint armour used in melee PvP) while others like weapons don't change much post upgrade, and therefore aren't worth upgrading.

Weapons

Upgrades to weapons can increase their numerical stats, including attack damage, crit probability and PvE/PvP damage. Weapons come with a flat rate bonus that increases damage per second. A lot of weapons also come with a fixed bonus which is activated when three or more identical weapons are equipped in a single unit. The cost of upgrading a weapon is contingent on its rarity and current level. For instance, a +2 weapon requires two regular Smithing Stones while a+3 requires four. The number of stones required to upgrade a gun will increase until it needs a higher level of Smithing Stones. At that point, it will reset back to one.

Upgrading weapons will also reroll their base stats. While this is generally a good thing but it can also have negative consequences as well. Upgrades can render items inaccessible, unless you're exceptionally lucky.

Upgrades can be made to armor items to increase their performance. This can increase the defense of a helm or chest while belts and gloves will increase their required strength and agility. Armor also offers a reroll option for its Enhanced Defense%, meaning that it could change its roll to a lower value.

The upgrade template for a weapon shows the new stats that it will gain upon upgrading, along with their relative values. This means that a weapon will gain 3% attack damage if it is upgraded from an 8 attack damage sword to an 11 attack damage sword. The 3% difference does not mean that the weapon will strike three times less, since it is an absolute number.

Rerolling a weapon is possible by pressing the green button in the item menu with the circling arrows. This will reroll an item and change its statistics, but not reset the weapon's levels, or tie it to the account status.

Armor

Making a few improvements to your armor can make a an enormous difference in your ability to survive. Certain sets can offer massive increases in resistance to curses, poison and fire as well as magic. This can make it easier to traverse difficult terrains. It isn't possible to upgrade armor in the same way as weapons. If you're playing as a Warrior, you should focus on upgrading your armor for physical strength or the power of spells. It's also a good idea to save your armor upgrades for armor you'll wear at the end of the game, like the Ring of Lightning and Spectral Shield or the helmet you wear for the final boss fight as well as the Monter Parts merchant's mask.

Upgrade vendors can be found at the capitals of each zone, and sometimes in dungeons. Upgrades for trinkets can be purchased using tokens, gold or fragments of rare trinkets.

Upgrades are a less expensive alternative to purchasing a new trinket. You can upgrade their trinket for just 12 tokens. The new trinket has the same base level as the previous trinket however, it will also come with an additional 1% bonus upgrade.

Trinkets can be upgraded once they are no longer needed and allows players to boost their power and value over time. They can be traded among players and are a viable alternative to gold.

Players should upgrade their most important items first. This usually means the best-in-slot items for their class, followed by their secondaries and then other items of gear they will not be replacing in the near future (for instance rings or cloaks). When deciding the items to upgrade, players must also be aware of the preferred statistics of their class.
