How to Replace an audi a4 replacement key G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician teaches you how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. The sensor is situated near the edges of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via the grey wire (T55/49) which is then sent to the tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is located at the edges of the transmission, directly above the flywheel ring. The sensor transmits an electrical signal through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU uses this information to regulate the amount of fuel and boost. It also sends signals to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to link the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft is TDC and the location of the camshaft so it can activate spark and injectors in the right way.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will display the P00160 error, which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft aren't in sync and could indicate the chain stretching or a jump link on the upper timing chain. However, the error code won't appear on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

Testing is a bit tricky as there are two different connector pins and they serve different purposes however the best method to test it is to measure the resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read about 1000 ohms when the sensor is operating at its maximum. Examine for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you have issues with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when i was accelerating to the fullest speed from highway paytoll i had an abrupt drop in power like the engine is out of gas or injectors are not firing anymore. I took out the spark plugs this morning, three were soaked in gasoline, and the fourth was unclean. When I crank the engine, there are no sparks i put tissue on the top of each hole in the injector and the 3 that were drenched in gazoline pop out, but the 4th stay shut. I tested the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I found 0ohm. So i assume the problem is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car can start when the G28 is not plugged in and is running fine when it is plugged in but it still has intermittent misfire issues at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even when unplugged, still shows temperatures of -49c. I also noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar while the actual pressure is 0.0 when I crank up the engine.

I don't know what to do. I think I've all other possibilities out. However, i'm afraid that I may have missed something. Let me know should you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 receives a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is the same as the G4 and both function in the 80 100, 200, UrS and RS2 cars which is why you can easily locate one at a junkyard or from a parts store. Testing them is easy to do - just put your DMM in resistance mode and measure the resistance between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector end up) and 2 (2nd from left on the black end of the connector). They must be infinite ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU in our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY ADU) engines requires to be aware of the position and speed of the crankshaft to determine fuel injector timing, etc. To do this, it makes use of a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). 5. Tachometer
