How to Replace an audi key fob G28 Engine Speed Sensor
In this video Charles the humble mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is situated on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel gear. It sends a signal to the ECU via a grey wire (T55/49) which is then sent to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.
1. Engine Speed Sensor
The grey wire is situated on the edge of transmission, just above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends an electrical signal through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU uses this information to control fuel and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.
The sensor serves as a reference point to connect with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft has reached TDC and also where the camshaft lies so that it can activate the spark and injectors.
If this sensor fails the ECU will throw an error code P00160 which indicates that the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are out of sync and possibly indicating the chain stretching or a jump link on the upper chain of timing. However the code will not appear on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).
Testing can be a bit difficult as there are two different connector pins, and they have different functions but the best method to test it is by measuring resistance between the sensor and the ECU. When the sensor is fully functional, it should read approximately 1000 ohms. Check for signs of coolant, or oil in the connector bay if there are problems with this part.
2. Injectors
Yesterday, when accelerating from highway paytoll at full speed, i noticed a huge reduction in power. It was like the engine had run out of gas. Or, my injectors weren't firing. I took out the spark plugs this morning, three were drenched in gasoline and the fourth was unclean. I placed a tissue over each injector hole, and when I turn the engine on without sparks, the ones with gazoline jump out. The 4th one stays closed. I checked the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I got 0ohm. Therefore, i think the issue is in another place.
I also tried to reset PID but without success. The car will start when the G28 is disconnected, but it runs fine with the G28 connected. However, audi connect key new audi key key (xs.xylvip.com) the intermittent misfire problem continues to occur at higher RPM. The coolant temperature sensor (G62) shows the wrong temperature of that is -49c even after unplugging it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar but the actual pressure is 0.
I'm not sure what to do, but i think i've pretty much completely ruled out all other possibilities. But i am afraid i might have missed something. If anyone has suggestions, please share them! TIA!
3. Fuel Pump
The fuel pump in the g28 receives a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sensor is identical to the G4 and they both work in the 80, 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a salvage yard or from a parts store. It is simple to test them - just switch your DMM into resistance mode and determine the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector end facing up). They should be infinite Ohms.
4. ECU
Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY, and ADU) engines have an ECU that needs to be aware of the speed and position of the crankshaft to make a decision about timing of the fuel injector, for example. In order to do this it makes use of a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If either of these sensors go wrong, you will receive codes on the diagnostic scanner which can lead to engine shutdown.
Some of the signs of a failing G28 sensor are an inaccurate gearbox rev counter, gears shifting quicker than normal and/or misfiring when in gear. It is likely that the sensor is failing and requires to be replaced if you notice any of these symptoms. They're inexpensive and easy to locate especially when they're an Bosch sensor like ours. Alternately, the GM version of this unit is also a great option.
5. Tachometer
A damaged engine sensor could cause a myriad of issues within your vehicle. It is a crucial part of the audi Remote Key's transmission since it relays information to the ECU about how the car's crankshaft is rotating. This sensor could cause the transmission to malfunction and other components of the car to be affected.
The G5 engine speed sensor is located on the edge of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU at pin T55/49 through a grey wire. The ECU then processes this signal to control fuel, timig, and boost as well as transmitting it to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster. You can test for sensor failure by examining the continuity of the sensor to the tachometer. You can also check continuity between pin T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79]), and between pin T6a/1 as well as pin T26a/12.
