The statistics of an item are improved through upgrading it, also known as "upping". Each upgrade increment gives an increase in the linearity of any stat.

Players can recycle six items at a time to gain a gauge for each item's upgraded component. The cost of recycling an item increases with its rarity and level.

Upgrade components

In Guild Wars 2, an upgrade to an item is a method to increase the stats of your armor and weapons. This can be accomplished in a variety of ways through the use of upgrade components or by increasing the rarity or mark level.
