Upgrade components are items that can be slotted into armor, weapons and trinkets in order to provide an extra stat boost or effect while they're in use. Upgrade components are only available to equipment that has a slot. The item must be at least upgraded to a blue level before the component can be used. An upgrade can have a prefix or suffix changing the name of the equipment to which it is applied (for example "Canthan Armor Insignia is changed to Canthan Armor of Minor Vigor). Some upgrades increase the Mark Level or Rarity of an item, which lets players to create stronger versions using fewer Upgrade crystals than they would require to achieve the same level using normal methods.

Once the player has completed the cutscene and defeated Crazed Mechanist the upgrades can be made at the Portative Forging Station. They can also be dropped by enemies while upgrading other gear, or by purchasing them from the cash store for 500 upgrade crystals each.

In the final game, you will often find that the Best item upgrade way to improve your equipment is to use Glyphs. They are the only upgrade components that can be upgraded to level 15 and provide significant boosts to your power on the Paragon Board.
The majority of upgrades in the game can be replaced however, Glyphs are only the one upgrade component that can be removed and re-placed without restrictions. The only exception is legendary equipment that requires the use of a Black Lion Salvage Kit to salvage and re-place.
The value of each Glyph is displayed when you choose it in your inventory. You can choose to replace it with a different Glyph of the same rank or higher rank, which will increase the overall value of the glyph.
Glyphs can be found in the Black Lion Trading Post as part of the Gem Store bundle or purchase, with certain unlimited-use tools as well as during Faction Crypt Raids. Each Faction Crypt could drop one of these Glyphs. There are some rare glyphs which you can find in any of the Faction Crypts.
After you have acquired the desired Glyphs you'll require them to be placed on your gear. Each Glyph will grant a distinct bonus that boosts a particular set of stat nodes that are within a radius of the Glyph. It could be +40 for one of your primary stats or +25 for two of your secondary stats, based on the Glyph.
Glyphs will boost all nodes connected to them, therefore it is recommended to place Glyphs in the most important spots on the Graph. This will maximize the impact. For example, a Druid should try to position their Glyphs near their primary damage nodes, however, you may also want to consider placing them near critical damage nodes, too.
