In this video, Charles the humble mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is located at the edge of transmission, above the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU through the grey wire T55/49 and then to the tachometer located on the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

It is located on the outside of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends an electrical signal to ECU pin T55/49 using a grey wire. The ECU then uses this information to control the flow of fuel, timig and boost. It also sends a signal to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to link with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must be aware when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is located so that it can start spark and injectors accordingly.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error message. This means that the Crank Shaft is out of alignment with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of a chain stretch or a jump in the chain link of the upper timing chain. However, the error code won't appear on its own, without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

Testing is a bit challenging since there are two pins for the connector and they serve different purposes however the best way to test it is to measure resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read about 1000 ohms when the sensor is at full operation. If you are having problems with this component, look for signs of oil or coolant in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating at full speed from the highway paytoll i had an abrupt drop in power as if the engine was running out of gas or the injectors aren't firing any more. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning, three were drenched in gasoline and the 4th was dry. When I start the engine without sparks, I put a piece of tissue on the top of each hole in the injector and the 3 drenched with gazoline leap out, however the 4th stay shut. I tested the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55/30/55/48/55/14/55/48/ i get 0ohm. So i assume the problem is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset PID without success. The car can start if the G28 is not plugged in and runs fine when it is plugged in but it still has the intermittent misfire issue at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even when it is unplugged, shows a temperature of -49c. Also, i noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit shows 2 bar while the actual pressure is 0.0 when i rev the engine.

I'm not certain what to do, i think i've pretty much completely ruled out all other possibilities. However, i'm afraid that i might have missed something. Let me know if you have any ideas! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 is activated by a signal sent from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is similar to the G4 sender and both work on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily find a spare audi key in a wrecking shop or a parts store. Test them out by putting your DMM in resistance mode and take measurements between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's end up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black connector's side). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU in our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY ADU) engines must know both the position and speed the crankshaft in order to make a decision about fuel injector timing, etc. To do this, it utilizes a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If either of these sensors go bad you will get codes on the diagnostic scanner that can lead to engine shutdown.

The signs of a malfunctioning G28 sensor include an inaccurate rev counter in the gearbox and gears that shift faster than normal, and/or a misfire when you are in gear. It is probable that the sensor is failing and needs to be replaced if you encounter any of these symptoms. The good thing is that they are very cheap and readily available, especially when you're looking at an Bosch unit which is what we have. Alternately, GM's version this part would be a good option.

5. Tachometer

A malfunctioning engine sensor can cause a number of problems in your vehicle. It's a crucial component of the transmission in your audi key, as it transmits information to the ECU about how fast or slowly the engine of the car is turning. If the sensor fails, it will affect the performance of the transmission, as well as the other car's components.

The G5 engine speed sensor is located at the edge of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear and sends a signal to the ECU at pin T55/49 via a grey wire.
