How to Replace an audi car key cover G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician teaches how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. The sensor is situated near the edges of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a signal to the ECU via a grey wire (T55/49) and then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is located on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends signals through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU uses this information to control fuel and boost. It also sends a signal to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference to correlate with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is located so that it can start spark and injectors in the right way.

If this sensor fails when it fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error message. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is not in sync with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of the possibility of a chain stretch or jumped chain link in the upper chain of timing. The code will not appear without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).

It's a bit tricky to test because there are various connector pins, and they all have different functions. The most effective method to test it is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read around 1000 ohms when it is operating at its maximum. If you're experiencing issues with this sensor, look for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when i was accelerating to the fullest speed from highway paytoll, i experienced a big cut in power like the engine is running out of gas or injectors aren't firing any more. This morning i pull out the spark plugs, three were drenched in gazoline, the 4th one was dry. I put a piece of tissue over each injector hole, and when i start the engine without sparks, the 3 with gazoline jump out. The 4th one stays shut. I tried to test the ground connections of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I found zero ohm. Therefore, i think the issue is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car is able to start if the G28 is unplugged and it runs perfectly when it is connected however it has intermittent misfire issues at higher RPM. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar when the actual pressure is zero.

I don't know what to do. I think I've all other possibilities out. I'm worried that i might have missed something. Let me know if you have any ideas! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump of the g28 receives signals from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sensor is the same as the G4 and they both work in the 80, 100, 200, UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a wrecking yard or from a parts store. It is simple to test them by putting your DMM in resistance mode and take measurements between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's side up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black end of the connector). They should be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU of our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY ADU) engines needs to know the position and speed of the crankshaft to make decisions regarding timing of the fuel injector, new audi key a1 key fob, auto-locksmiths43493.blog-gold.com, etc. It makes use of a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to achieve this. The good news is that they are quite affordable and easy to find, especially in the case of the Bosch unit which is what we have. Alternatively, GM's version of this part is an option.

5. Tachometer

A faulty engine speed sensor could be the reason behind numerous problems in your car. It's a crucial component of the transmission in your Audi Remote Key because it relays information to the ECU about how fast or slow the engine of the car is spinning. If the sensor fails, it could affect the performance of the transmission and the rest of the car's components.

The G5 engine sensor is located at the outskirts of transmission, above the flywheel ring. It transmits a signal via an uncolored wire to the ECU pin T55/49. The ECU then uses and processes this signal to control the flow of fuel, timig and boost as well as transmitting it to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster. You can check the sensor for failure by checking continuity between it and the tachometer. You can also check continuity between ECU pin T55/49 and the instrument cluster connection to pin T6a/1 (trace [79]) and between pin T6a/1 and the instrument cluster pin T26a/12. It should show approximately 1000 ohms of resistance between those two pins.
