In this video Charles the Humble Mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is located at the top of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal the ECU via an uncolored wire (T55/49) and then to the tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

Located on the edge of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends signals to ECU pin T55/49 through an uncolored wire. The ECU then uses this information to control fuel, timig and boost. It also sends a signal to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster.

The sensor serves as a reference for comparing with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft reached TDC and also the position of the camshaft, to trigger the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails when it fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error message. This means that the Crank Shaft is not in alignment with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate a chain stretch or a jumped chain link in the upper chain of timing. However, the error code won't appear on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

It's a bit tricky to test as there are several pins on the connector, and each has its own functions. The best way to do it is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. When the sensor is fully operational, it should be reading approximately 1000 ohms. If you're having issues with this part, check for evidence of oil or coolant in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating at full speed from the highway paytoll, i experienced an abrupt drop in power like the engine is out of gas or injectors are not firing any more. Today, i pulled out the spark plugs, 3 were drenched in gazoline, the 4th one was dry. When I start the engine with no sparks, i place a tissue on top of each injector hole and the 3 drenched with gazoline pop out, but the 4th stay shut. I tried to test the ground connections of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I got zero ohm. So i assume the problem is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car can start if the G28 is disconnected and runs fine when it is connected, but still is experiencing intermittent misfires at higher RPM. The coolant temperature sensor (G62) shows the wrong temp value -49c even when i unplug it. I also noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit is showing 2 bar when the actual pressure is 0.0 when i rev the engine.

I'm not sure what to do, but i feel i have pretty much eliminated everything else. However, i'm afraid that I might have missed something. If anyone has any suggestions, please share them! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump of the g28 gets a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sender is identical to the G4 and both are used in the 80, 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars which is why you can easily locate one at a salvage yard or from a parts store. It is easy to test them - just put your DMM into resistance mode and test the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump on the connector's edge facing up). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU in our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY) engines needs to know the position and speed the crankshaft to determine timing of fuel injectors, etc. It utilizes a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to achieve this. If either of these goes bad you will get codes on the diagnostic scanner that can lead to engine shutdown.

Some of the signs of a malfunctioning G28 sensor are an inaccurate rev counter in the gearbox and gears that shift faster than normal, and/or a misfire when you're in gear. It is possible that the sensor is failing and requires to be replaced if you notice any of these symptoms. They're inexpensive and easy to locate particularly if they're a Bosch model like ours. If you prefer, GM's version of this component is a good option.

5. Tachometer

A faulty engine speed sensor could be a cause for many problems in your car. It's an essential component of the transmission in your audi replacement key cost because it relays information to the ECU regarding how fast or slow the engine is turning. This sensor could cause the transmission to malfunction and other components of the car to be affected.

The G5 engine sensor is located near the edge of the transmission, just above the flywheel ring. It transmits an electrical signal through a gray wire to the ECU pin T55/49. The ECU then processes this signal to control fuel, timig and boost, and also transmitting it to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster. You can test for sensor failure by checking continuity from the sensor to the tachometer. Also, you can check continuity between pin T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79]) and between pin T6a/1 and pin T26a/12. You should detect the resistance to be around 1000 ohms in these areas.
