How to Replace an audi tt key fob G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician teaches you how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. The sensor is located at the top of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a message to the ECU via an uncolored wire T55/49, then to the tachometer located on the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is located on the edge of transmission, just above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends an electrical signal through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU utilizes this information to regulate boost and fuel. It also sends an indication to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to link the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must be aware when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is located so that it can start spark and injectors in the right way.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will display an error code P00160. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is not in line with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of an issue with the chain or a jumpy chain link in the upper chain. The code won't appear without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).

It's a bit tricky to test because there are various pins on the connector and each has its own functions. The most effective method to test it is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. When the sensor is functional, it should read approximately 1000 ohms. Examine for signs of coolant, or oil in the connector bay if you are experiencing issues with this component.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, as i was accelerating off the highway paytoll at maximum speed I noticed a massive reduction in power. It was like the engine was running out of gas. Or, my injectors were not firing. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning and found that 3 were soaked with gasoline and the fourth was unclean. I placed a tissue over each injector hole and when I start the engine without sparks, the 3 that have gazoline pop right out. The 4th one remains closed. I inspected the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55,30/55 and 48/55 I get 0ohm. I'm assuming that the issue is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset the PID but without success. The car can start if the G28 is disconnected and is running fine when it is connected, but still has intermittent misfire issues at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for the coolant (G62) shows the wrong temperature value of that is -49c even after unplugging it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar while the actual pressure is zero.

I don't know what to do. I feel like i've pretty much ruled everything else out. I'm concerned that i may have missed something. If anyone has any ideas please let me know! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump of the g28 receives a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sensor is the same as the G4 and they both work in the 80 100, 200, UrS and RS2 cars which is why you can easily locate one at a wrecking yard or in a local parts store. It is simple to test them - just put your DMM into resistance mode and determine the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector end facing up). They must be infinite ohms.

4. ECU

5. Tachometer
